Spam is everywhere on the internet. Don’t be surprised if your WordPress website is flooded with automatic spam comments trying to sell or redirect to nasty product websites. So, is there an effective and free way to block such spam comments and put a ” full stop” to this menace?

Akismet from WordPress folks to the rescue

Install the Akismet plugin on your WordPress website to get started. After install, sign up for an account on their official website to grab the API key. Then add that API key in Akismet settings panel in the WordPress dashboard and you are all set for automatic protection from spam comments.

While creating an account at the Akismet website, you can select free account or paid account depending on feature set you require. Free account works well in blocking spam comments (hint!). Fyi, this plugin is from makers of WordPress – so you are in absolutely safe hands.

Other plugins to deal with spam comments menace

If Akismet does not work for you, then try these popular alternative options like: WordPress Zero Spam and WP Spam Shield plugin.

I like Anti Spam Bee. Maybe it’s because I think the bee is cute, but it has worked pretty well for me.

Anti Spam Bee looks like a good solution for this. Thanks!

While I love spamshield, it’s caused a lot of problems on client sites over the last year. One update 500’ed every site. That was a fun day.

Seems to have a lot of random conflicts here and there as well.

We still use it, just more carefully.
